Seeing A Doctor After A Car Accident

Being in a car accident is scary. After you get over the initial shock, there is a lot to do. There’s the police investigation, a call to the insurance company, and a visit to a doctor.

Even if an accident is minor, you should still see a doctor. There might be an underlying injury you can’t see.

Delayed Reactions

Even an accident at a low speed can cause problems. Adrenaline that flows after a crash can hide pain for a while, but when that wears off, the pain can appear. Sometimes, the pain doesn’t appear for days or even weeks.

Endorphins do the same thing. They can block pain for a length of time to help you get through an immediate situation.

The release of adrenaline and endorphins can explain why some people do not feel any pain right after a car accident, but they do later.

An injury from a car accident can be a bit like when you go to the gym and do a difficult workout. The exercise feels great at the time, but soreness sets in a day or two later. The same goes for some injuries after car accidents.

Common Injuries

Many people in accidents do not have time to brace themselves for impact. Soft tissue can be damaged because of the sudden jerking of the neck and body. Whiplash in the neck area is common because the neck often snaps forwards and backwards.

Injuries to legs, knees, and other joints and tendons are also common because of the sudden jerky movements in a crash.

Soft tissue injuries do not show up on an X-ray, so sometimes pain or discomfort is your only indication of a problem.

Concussions can be another serious injury that might not show up right away. They happen when the head is jolted, causing the brain to hit the inside of the skull.

Symptoms might not show up right away and can include:

  • Problems thinking, concentrating, or remembering
  • Headache
  • Blurry vision
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Lack of energy
  • Disrupted sleep patterns

Insurance and Legal Issues

It is also a good idea to see a doctor after an accident in case you have any issues down the road with insurance companies or lawyers.

Sometimes, insurance companies will ask for a release of claims, so it’s a good idea to see a doctor before signing anything. If you sign something and an injury causes problems later, you might have no recourse.
